Doering Named Top Fleet Management Company

A closer look at the people-first service model, independent guidance, and full-lifecycle support behind Transportation Review’s recognition.

Profiled by Transportation Review Featuring Doering Fleet Management leadership
Top Fleet Management Company 2025 awarded to Doering Fleet Management by Transportation Review

Transportation Review selected Doering Fleet Management as its exclusive Top Fleet Management Company for 2025 after examining the company’s service philosophy, leadership perspective, technology, and approach to long-term client partnerships.

A relationship-driven approach to fleet management

The profile centers on a simple distinction: fleet management may involve vehicles and data, but lasting results still depend on people. Doering’s model gives clients direct access to experienced team members who understand their business, anticipate issues, and stay involved instead of treating service as a series of transactions.

Transportation Review illustrates that difference through a major organization that selected Doering after more than two decades with another provider. The deciding factor was not a flashy pitch. It was the opportunity to work with a responsive team that valued personal attention alongside operational performance.

“They are not the largest, but they are the best there is by all accounts!” Transportation Review

Independent guidance supported by national resources

As an independent fleet management company, Doering is positioned to recommend strategies around long-term value rather than the priorities of a particular manufacturer or bank. Its teams evaluate how vehicles affect cash flow, risk, employee productivity, brand image, and the customer experience before recommending a plan.

That consultative approach is supported by modern technology and national capabilities. Clients gain useful fleet data and reporting while continuing to work with professionals who can explain what the information means and turn it into practical decisions.

Support across the entire vehicle lifecycle

The recognition also reflects the breadth of Doering’s support—from finding and funding vehicles through operating, maintaining, and eventually replacing or selling them.

Acquisition and Leasing Securing appropriate vehicles and structuring programs around business needs.
Administration and Maintenance Managing registrations, renewals, repairs, scheduling, and day-to-day details.
Fuel, Safety, and Visibility Using transaction data and telematics to improve control, safety, and efficiency.
Replacement and Remarketing Monitoring depreciation and market timing to help maximize vehicle value.

Growth without sacrificing the personal touch

Transportation Review describes a company expanding through strong retention, referrals, and organizations looking for a more attentive fleet partner. The goal is to keep combining national scale, proven processes, and better technology with the human connection that clients value most.

Artificial intelligence and improved analysis may strengthen the work happening behind the scenes, but Doering’s direction remains centered on experienced people, clear advice, and partnerships built for the long term.

FAQs

Common fleet questions.

Clear answers for business owners, operations managers, controllers, and fleet decision-makers evaluating a better way to manage vehicles.

What is an open-ended fleet lease?

An open-ended lease is a commercial vehicle lease designed around the needs of business fleets. Payments are structured using an estimated lease-end value, or residual. When the vehicle is sold, the business settles the difference between that residual and the actual sale proceeds. If the vehicle sells above the residual, the resulting equity may be returned or applied toward a replacement vehicle; if it sells below the residual, the business is responsible for the shortfall.

This structure provides greater flexibility for mileage, upfitting, vehicle use, and replacement timing than many traditional closed-end leases. 93% of our leases end with the client receiving substantial positive equity or breaking even.

Are there mileage limits or over-mileage fees?

Open-ended fleet leases generally do not impose the mileage caps or per-mile penalties commonly associated with closed-end consumer leases. Expected annual mileage is used to establish an appropriate residual and replacement plan. Higher mileage can affect resale value, but it does not trigger a separate over-mileage fee.

Why would a business lease instead of buy?

Leasing can preserve cash for operations, reduce the amount tied up in depreciating assets, and create a more predictable replacement cycle. It can also keep vehicle acquisition separate from traditional borrowing capacity. The right choice depends on cash flow, usage, tax treatment, and long-term fleet goals, so the Great Plains team provides a side-by-side lease-versus-buy comparison before recommending a path.

Can we end an open-ended lease early?

Yes. Open-ended leases are designed to provide flexibility rather than lock a business into a rigid replacement date. If the vehicle is sold before the planned term ends, the sale proceeds are compared with the current payoff amount. Proceeds above the payoff may create positive equity for the client; proceeds below it result in a balance due. Market depreciation, mileage, condition, and timing all affect the outcome, and the Great Plains team can help evaluate those factors before a decision is made.

Can I buy the vehicle during or after the lease term?

Yes. At the scheduled end of the lease, the vehicle can be purchased for the contract residual value. After the first 12 months, a vehicle can generally be purchased for its current payoff amount. Some vehicles acquired with manufacturer fleet incentives must remain in Doering’s lease portfolio for a minimum period—commonly 12 months—to satisfy program requirements. The exact timing and purchase amount depend on the individual agreement, so the team will confirm the applicable terms.

Can we lease used vehicles?

Yes. Doering can structure leases for qualifying used vehicles. The team evaluates age, mileage, condition, expected usage, maintenance exposure, and resale outlook, then recommends vehicles that fit the business while identifying options that may carry unnecessary risk.

Can a start-up or franchise lease a vehicle?

Yes. Start-ups and franchise businesses may qualify for fleet leasing, subject to credit review. A newer business may be asked for an initial payment of approximately 10%–20%, and some approvals may use a shorter term—such as 48 months instead of 60. Requirements vary by business profile, vehicle, and credit strength, and the Great Plains team will explain the available structure before moving forward.

What types of vehicles does Doering lease?

Doering can lease a broad range of vehicles, from standard passenger vehicles and luxury models to small service vans, work trucks, specialty units, and tractor-trailers. Recommendations are based on the vehicle’s intended use, availability, operating cost, resale outlook, and fit for the business.

How are wear, damage, and vehicle condition handled?

Open-ended fleet leases typically do not use a separate end-of-term wear-and-tear penalty schedule. Vehicle condition still matters because damage or excessive wear can reduce resale value and the equity available when the vehicle is sold, much as it would with an owned vehicle. Proactive maintenance and replacement planning help manage that exposure.

Can leased vehicles be upfitted or customized for commercial use?

Yes. Commercial vehicles can be equipped for the work they need to perform, and eligible upfit costs can often be incorporated into the lease structure. The Great Plains team can help coordinate practical, repeatable upfits that support operations while protecting long-term resale value.

Can you help if we already own our vehicles?

Yes. A fleet review can still uncover opportunities around replacement timing, maintenance cost, resale strategy, lease-versus-buy comparisons, administrative burden, and total cost of ownership.

What size fleet do you work with?

Doering works with a wide range of business fleets, from smaller growing fleets to much larger multi-location operations. The Great Plains team is a strong fit for companies that want local guidance with national fleet resources behind it.

Do you only help with leasing?

No. Leasing is one piece of the picture. Doering can also help with fleet consulting, maintenance programs, fuel management, administration, title and registration support, remarketing, and replacement planning.

What happens after I submit the form?

The Great Plains team will review your fleet size, location, and needs, then follow up to learn more about your vehicles, current process, and where a better plan could save time or money.
